OSCARS – “Best Picture” Category to Have Whopping 10 Nominees

They'll need five hours just to get through the nominees for Best Picture at next year's Oscar telecast.

While we’re on the subject of film – the announcement was made today that starting next year, the Oscar category for “Best Picture” will now feature 10 nominees instead of the usual 5.  The increase will only apply to the one category.

The Academy’s PR machine has already pointed out that in the beginning the awards had ten nominees for every category, as if the reason behind this move is to harken back to days of yore when the men were men and the women were in very real danger of being killed by Fatty Arbuckle.  Wholly insincere, of course, since the only thing that the Oscars have in common with its earliest incarnations is the presentation of the statue and a bombed Jack Nicholson in the fourth row aisle seat.  Oh, and just like the first few ceremonies, nobody outside of the room hosting the event bothered to acknowledge its existence or take it seriously.

Which is exactly why this is being done – to get more people to watch.  A common complaint from this past year’s telecast was that the films nominated were largely unrecognizable to the casual film-goer and as a result they turned away from the telecast in droves.  Now with a whopping TEN FILMS competing for the trophy, the likeihood increases of the viewing audience knowing at least two or three of the films being nominated.

In fairness to the Academy, there have always been complaints of films being overlooked in the category.  There simply isn’t any other way to ensure that worthy films are nominated without sacrificing name recognition or the integrity of the award.  So in that way it’s a positive move, even if that wasn’t their true intention.

If only they’d done this sooner.  “Don’t Mess with the Zohan,” you came too soon.
