SUNDAY NIGHT HODGE-PODGE: Capital News 9 Endorses Illiteracy, Annual Golden Globes Rant, and More

Since nobody died, I can say the following about an article on CapitalNews9.com about the I-90 shooting: is this supposed to resemble the English language?

– It was lunchtime. Troopers pulling over a yellow taxicab from Connecticut but this traffic stop almost turning deadly.

State Police say a man started shooting sending troopers ducking for cover Police telling people stuck in traffic to get out and run for their lives.

And for folks near the scene, the news was shocking.

“Oh my god I usually take that road everyday. I’m glad it’s Saturday,” said one person.

“That’s really shocking around this area for me,” said another.

The by-line is credited to “Web Staff,” which I can assume is because it’s either some sort of transcription software that automatically generates the articles from live video of the story that airs on television, or because the person responsible for posting it knows how awful it is and doesn’t want their name associated with it. Either way, Capital News 9 should be ashamed of themselves for putting out such a shit article on their website.

WHAT I MISSED WHILE I WAS HAVING AN AWESOME WEEKEND:
* The Cardinals Whooping some Ass Congratulations to each and every Cardinals fan out there. Sorry both of you missed the game because you had to work!
* The Giants Losing GO BIG BLEW
* The Golden Globes Which is a shame, because I always love experiencing that initial elation of actors and/or films I like winning awards followed by the depressing crash that comes when I remember what a complete sham the Hollywood Foreign Press is. For those who don’t know, the HFPA consists of one hundred anonymous members. Those whose names have been unearthed have included freelancers from countries that barely have anything resembling a newspaper let alone anything with any sort of journalistic credibility and individuals whom are suspected to have completely fabricated credentials. In terms of the awards themselves, those often go to the highest bidder and/or the star(s) that give the individuals the most attention. And I do mean that literally, as the general perception of the HFPA is that they’re a bunch of bottom-feeding starf***ers. Oh, and they also have a history of quite literally promising actors awards so long as they actually showed up to the damn ceremony. Go look it up, kids. The lack of any semblance of credibility or shame on the part of the organization would be hilarious if the lack of attention it got from the mainstream media wasn’t so tragic.

Going back to football real quick, enfarcer posted some fascinating trivia that would apply to the Steelers playing in the Super Bowl against either team vying for the NFC Championship. Interesting stuff!

I capped off an incredible weekend by going to see “Gran Turino” with the woman, Ed, and our good friend Danielle. It was, in short, very flawed but ridiculously enjoyable. Eastwood has fantastic screen presence and is just so goddamn good as an actor it’s ridiculous. There’ll be more about it tomorrow when I post the full review.

EDIT: An interesting New York Times article from 2005 on the “starf***er” nature of the HFPA and the suicide of one of its members.

More later…

Please note I said a HISTORY of it. They’re a bit more careful now.

Oh, and you should search this out, which was a real eye-opener.

These aren’t just empty accusations and rumors floating around the ‘net. Shit’s for real.

Yeah, both he and Gabriel Byrne weren’t there and both won (at least Heath had a valid excuse).

Don’t get me wrong, I agree with you completely. It’s almost like professional wrestling: Scripted and Rigged, and except not even the people in the ring are aware of the outcome

      See above.

got it, and on the Time Union subject. I notice that that shit happens alot. It’s like they got some demented Japanese intern that only speaks engrish real good and let em loose on the website. I half expect every article to end with “YATTA!”

It’s like, you know, I understand that there’s a wild difference between WRITING writing and writing a newspaper article. I’m not asking for Oscar Wilde. I just like to read news articles and understand what the fuck is going on.
