Truth & Puro

In case you didn’t bother reading (and I wouldn’t blame you), that last post was fictional and was part of the “Blog Like It’s The End Of The World” project, which is linked on the bottom of the aforementioned post.

Maeve (mourningdove) asked me to write an entry for it, so I did. She did one that was much better than mine that involved the Duck Tours. It’s awesome. Go read it.

Sorry to be all Precious Roy and make lots of suckers out of girls and boys. I just started writing it in that manner, and didn’t see any reason to stop until I was almost done. Then I realized how long it was, how uninteresting it got at parts, and that most people would probably tune out before getting to the big reveal. Ah well.

Although the previous post was fictional, there was some brief moments of truth in there. The true parts:
* The part about the Post Office offering the convenient method of changing your address online which has unnecessary extra steps that make it not really all that convenient? TRUE!
* I planned to do laundry after work? TRUE! (though in reality I did end up doing it)
* My next Netflix DVD is indeed the Hellboy animated “Sword of Storms” movie, and it was supposed to arrive last Wednesday. So the part about me having to report it as lost in the mail? TRUE!

Everything else was pure rock and roll fantasy.

Speaking of DVDs, I decided to treat myself to some Puroresu DVDs courtesy of the ridiculously reasonable IVPVideos.com, a site that I really can’t plug enough. Though it’s not a rapid resurgence, there’s something resembling a comeback for the professional wrestling industry in Japan thus far this year. New Japan is once again selling out venues that, while only seating about three or four thousand, they weren’t selling out just two months ago. Regardless of the business side of things, in-ring wise there’s some GREAT GREAT stuff going on over there. Check it out.

Purchases en route to Hutton St.:

New Japan Pro Wrestling 4/13/07: Tiger Mask & Koji Kanemoto & Wataru Inoue take on Jushin Thunder Liger & Milano Collection AT & BxB Hulk (it’s a shame they had to throw shitty Tiger Mask IV into that match), Jado & Gedo vs. Masaaki Mochizuki & Yasushi Kanda, Minoru defends the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship against FUNKY WEAPON Rysuke Taguchi, and the IWGP Title Match between Hiroshi Tanahashi and Yuji Nagata that has been given five stars by everybody under the Sun.

Dragon Gate 4/15/07: Dragon Kid vs. Masato Yoshino (both guys are ridiculously fast; in particular Yoshino at times has what appears to be superhuman speed coming off the ropes), Jushin Thunder Liger & BxB Hulk vs. Masaaki Mochizuki & Don Fujii, BxB Hulk does double duty the next match by taking on Magnitude Kishiwada, and Jado & Gedo defend the WAR International Jr. Heavyweight Tag Titles against CIMA & Susumu Yokosuka.

New Japan 4/23/07: Hiroshi Tanahashi teams with the giant freak Manabu Nakinishi to take on MR. HIP ATTACK Shiro Koshinaka & Tomohiro Ishii, and Togi Makabe takes on Shinsuke Nakamura in a Chain Death Match. Makabe’s been great, as has this fued.

WrestleLand 5/7/07: A spin-off of New Japan – yes, the major Japanese promotions all did brand extensions. I shit you not. They use the same workers as the main roster, however they put a different spin on it and make it totally whacky at times. The main event has Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Manabu Nakinishi vs. TARU in a 3-Way Ladder match, which looked like too much fun to pass up.

All-Japan Pro Wrestling 5/12/07: The fake Mexicans (Pepe Michinoku & Miguel Hayashi Jr. & El Nosawa Mendoza) collide with Voodoo Murderers (TARU & the awesome and horribly underrated Shuji Kondo & “brother” YASSHI), Satoshi Kojima takes on Triple-Crown Champion Minoru Suzuki (their match back in February was fucking great), and Kesuke Sasaki (TAKE THE DREAM) goes one-on-one with Kurt Angle’s Hawaiian doppleganger, Taiyo Kea.

All-Japan 5/13/07: Dick Togo (for those of you who haven’t seen him in a few years – he’s still chubby and he’s still awesome) teams with Ryuji Hijikata to take on Katsuhiko Nakijima & Miguel Hayashi Jr., and Kensuke Sasaki takes (THE DREAM!) on Satoshi Kojima. Quick note about Nakijima: he’s the adopted son (both in and out of storyline) of Kensuke Sasaki, whom Sasaki has been training since he was 16). To say there’s never been a wrestler better at his age in the history of professional wrestling would be a vast understatement and he’s already, without hyperbole, one of the best workers on the planet. It scares me to think how fucking good he’s going to be in another five years.

Pro Wrestling NOAH 3/5/06: Probably the best card of any Japanese show last year. The show has Naomichi Marufuji taking on Akira Taue, the first match between Mitsuharu Misawa and Takeshi Morishima (which is said to be MUCH MUCH better than the painfully average match they had this past January), KENTA vs. Kenta Kobashi (sweet Jesus), and Jun Akiyama taking on my favorite wrestler at the moment – superdick former Pancrase champion Minoru Suzuki.

Now to something that ISN’T cheap – laundry. I haven’t had to use a Laundromat in the longest time, and was I ever shocked when I realized how much I had to spend today. It’s important to keep in mind that I was down to the bare minimum and doing hardcore laundry (four loads – two colors, one whites, one permanent press). But even with the ridiculous amount I had to do, the fact that I had to pay $14 to do laundry is ridiculous. Whatever happened to the dollar wash, dollar dry? Thems were the days.

When I came back to the apartment after doing laundry, there was a flyer in my mailbox for a community meeting at City Hall. There’s a tattoo shop that’s trying to open on 15th Street about a block and a half away from my house. The text:

“Beman Park Neighborhood Association”

At their next meeting, the Planning Board will address a variance requested by the ‘Gates’ tattoo parlor to move to Lloyd’s Studio (Eagle & 15th). We are very opposed because of the type of clientèle, it is a residential area, children access and exit school buses at that corner, and the current location of the parlor (2304 15th St.) is poorly maintained. A tattoo parlor at this location will adversely impact the value of all our properties.

Please plan to attend the Planning Board meeting with us –
Thursday, June 14, 2007 at 76pm in City Hall

(The strikethrough was recreating the hand-written correction to the time of the meeting on the flyer.)

1. I’ve never known of a tattoo parlor to open up and completely ruin a neighborhood. I could be wrong on that, though.
2. The current location of “Gates” is right near my apartment, and I don’t see any evidence of it being poorly maintained.
3. I think that whomever made up this flyer is operating under the 1950s assumption that only bikers and ex-convicts get tattoos.
4. In general, Tattoo Parlors do not abduct children off the street and tat them.
5. The location “Gates” is moving from? Is literally NOT EVEN TWO BLOCKS from where they are now.

I’m so going to this meeting. Here’s hoping hilarity will ensue.

More later…
