The 1/2 Hour News Hour

A clip has shown up on YouTube for the new comedy series “The 1/2 Hour News Hour” that will debut soon on Fox News Channel. It’s their version of The Daily Show, and…well, just look.

The studio audience’s laughter is either canned or really, really forced. I can’t tell which it is. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt, though, and say that maybe – just maybe – this was just a test taping.

What I can’t give them the benefit of the doubt on:
* They literally recreated the set of “The Daily Show.”
* They literally recreated the graphical scheme of “The Daily Show.”
* Their host and co-host have the charisma of wet bricks.
* Their host’s delivery is worse than a Palestinian FedEx truck.
* Almost no jokes.
* Jokes that exist are cliche, if not plagiarized.

The last one really gets me. Part of the problem with “The Daily Show” in the past year or so, and why “The Colbert Report” has eclipsed it in popularity, is the seeming absence of jokes in some segments.

That has to be one of the least funny things I’ve seen in a long time.
And the laughter has to be in studio. People would lose their jobs for using canned laughter that bad.

I’d think that people would be fired for producing a show this bad, period.

Comparing this to TDS is like comparing Mallard Fillmore to… something funny. It’s nothing but red meat for conservative biascrats, just one more thing they can point to and say “Now this is funny, cuz der ain’t no liberals, and they ain’t makin’ fun of Bush, so they don’t hate America!”

    /eeeeugh, can’t believe I used to be like that…

I don’t think at your worst (which still wasn’t THAT bad) you were ever this bad. This is just devoid of any humor whatsoever. It’s like they had Bill O’Reilly pen the “jokes” himself, sit up with a grin on his face, and say “boy this isn’t hard at all!”

See? This is why Republicans shouldn’t try to be funny.

    They always fuck it up.

And I’ve decided that it’s a crappy clip of really forced laughter. Which is…odd.

Yeah, I’ve settled on canned laughter. Which is odd, because like you pointed out, it’s REALLY forced. I’ve always found canned laughter to be out of place when it’s used, but this is just ridiculous.

And hey, I’ve known some funny Republicans. This isn’t about being a Republican or a Democrat, it’s about putting a little effort into production and writing vs. whatever the Hell they’re doing with this show.
