Who’s Stashu Pandowski?

The answer: me.

When I was a child, at an age far too young for me to recall, my grandmother would watch me.  Once in awhile a commercial would come on for a collection of polka songs, and when that accordion struck up, I would jump up and start dancing with a huge grin on my face. The song went something like “Stashu Pandowski was the polka king,” and so my grandmother and her sister, my Aunt Patty, took to calling me Stashu Pandowski (or “Stash” for short). It spread to the rest of my family, but went away once I hit puberty.

With one major exception – my Aunt Patty. Even when I became an adult, I’d still be greeted with “Hello, Stash!” I know that a lot of people don’t care for nicknames they attain in childhood, particularly from family members. That wasn’t the case here. If anything, I always looked forward to hearing it. It was like a sign of refuge, a harbinger of good times to come that would make me forget about my trials and tribulations during her visit. She was never anything but wonderful to us throughout our childhood and beyond, and was there for us more than any other member of either side of my extended family.

I don’t have a single memory of her that doesn’t bring a smile to my face. There was never a curt word towards or about us. She was a woman who genuinely loved life, and that attitude was contagious. It would infect everyone in the room with a boisterous reverence for anything and everything that came up in conversation.

In particular, Patty loved her family. She would light up when she spoke of her daughters and their accomplishments. Some parents will do it to boast, but my Aunt Patty was genuine in the love and pride she had for her daughters. Talk of them would include reactions that were every bit as if she were hearing it all herself for the first time. If I ever have kids, I know that if I love them even half as much and hold them in as much esteem as Patty did her children, I’ll have done alright.

We lost Patty earlier tonight after a long, brave, and tenacious battle with cancer. In the true Murray tradition, she was a fighter until the very end. Please include her, her husband, her daughters, and her grandchildren in your thoughts and/or prayers tonight.

I randomly came upon this email when I was looking for the lyrics for Stashu pandowski which my lovely Polish mother used to sing to me when I was little….here is her version which is engrained in my memory because it was my favorite as a child.

Stashu Pandowski was so very gay
talk about his sweetheart on his wedding day
    Stashu Pandowski’s funny anyway
    when he talk about her
    this is what he say

ask me now no questions and I’ll tell you no more lies
    when I marry my Sophia
she’s the apple of my eye
she’s not very much good for pretty
but she’s pretty much good for strong
she’s not very much good for pretty
but she’s pretty much good for strong

    do I love her?
    do I love her?
nothing wrong I say with that
in the winter, in the winter
    she be cooking
    I be fat.

Every Saturday morning, my step-father used to make the most fantastic kielbasa and scrambled eggs breakfast with Cousin Charley’s polka party blaring on the radio. Staszu Pandowski was one of my favorites that seemed to be played every week. I remember the words a little differently, including a second verse.

Stashu Pandowski feel so very gay.
He talk about his sveetheart on his vedding day.
    Stashu Pandowski, funny anyway.
When he talk about her, this is what he say.

Oh, ask me now no questions,
I be telling now no lies,
    When I’m marry my Sophia,
She’s be apple of my eye.
She’s not very much good for pretty
but she’s vork hard all day long.
She’s not very much good for pretty
but she’s pretty much good for strong
Sure I love her, Sure I love her,
Nothing wrong I say vit dat.
In the vinter, in the vinter,
She’s be cook and I get fat.

Good luck, Pandowski, round ve go von more.
Happy, oh by golly, come on tell us more.
Who’s be the boss now, after vedding day?
    Come on, Stashu, tell now.
    Whatchu got to say?

Oh, ask me now no questions,
I be telling now no lies,
    When I’m marry my Sophia,
She’s be apple of my eye.
She’s not very much good for pretty
    when I’m talking always wrong.
She’s not very much good for pretty
but she’s pretty much good for strong
Sure I love her, Sure I love her,
Nothing wrong I say vit dat.
In the vinter, in the vinter,
She’s be cook and I get fat.

Remember, this is from memory so it may not be exact.

All we heard from our parents back in the fifties was:

“Stashu Pandowski, he’s so very gay, talked about his sweetheart on his wedding day.
Stashu Pandowski, he’s so very gay, talked about his sweetheart this is what he say…
Ask me now no questions and I’ll tell you now no lies. Come to my house and I’ll feed you on flies…” That was all we heard of the song lyrics till now.

All I can remember from the ’60’s is the following fragment “she’s not very very good for looking, but she’s very very good for strong, in a cabin in a blizzard she’s the one you take along” — It was on the radio all the time! Does anyone else remember this?

So many index page are cluttered and poorly designed, loaded with poor graphics, bad menu structures,
oddball words or my absolute least favorite,
30-60 second Flash animation sequences which force the user
to sit and stare at a blank screen while
the animation loads. Get the added power you crave with our bolt on supercharger systems.
Installing a cold air kit infuses your air filter with
fresh, denser, cool air, instead of allowing it to suck the warm air from under the hood back
    into the engine.
